Rough Terrain Forklift Safety
Intended for construction locations, where supplies should be transported on surfaces which are not paved are rough terrain forklifts. The safe and correct use of rough terrain forklifts is vital to ensure the safety of both the operator and other workers at the work site.
Terrain
These trucks are built for rough terrain, but care should still be taken to be able to prevent tip overs. The forklift is top heavy and should just be operated on level ground when lifting.
Speed
Even if there are no Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations governing forklift speed restrictions, forklift operators should drive at a safe speed at all times. Driving on terrain that is rough or uneven requires even more caution. Steering, particularly, can be very dangerous at faster speeds.
Incline
If you are operating on a slope, you should keep the load on the machine's uphill side. The rule of thumb is drive up, and back down. Never attempt to lift a load when operating on a sloped surface. The change in the center of gravity could cause the machine to tip over.
Safety Devices
Like any driver, forklift operators are obliged to wear seat belts. Make certain that the overhead guard is firmly in place. Depending upon the working surroundings, hearing and eye protection may need to be worn. Make certain that a working fire extinguisher is mounted on the forklift.
Weather
Weather could affect forklift operating conditions. Load handling, speed and turning might need to be adjusted to guarantee safety when operating a forklift in snow, ice or rain.
