Forklift Safety Guidelines and Tips
Within the United States, 20,000 people are injured each year in accidents related to the use of forklifts. And each and every year around 100 deaths are caused by forklift accidents. Fortunately, correct training concerning operation procedures and maintenance could significantly reduce the risk of accidents. The basic safety rules and tips below should be followed when using a forklift.
Training
It is the job of the employer to make sure that the proper training program is given to the employees and that operators of forklifts are trained.. Training involves a combination of presentations, lectures, discussions and practical hands-on training. Reevaluation should occur every three years. Forklift operators must be up-to-date with current forklift safety regulations. Forklift training program content includes general workplace hazards, dangers of forklift operations, dangers connected to using the particular forklift which the employee will be using and workplace surfaces and lighting. An employee should be at least 18 years old to operate a forklift.
Maintenance
Forklift inspections should be carried out on a daily basis to be able to ensure the safe and proper functioning of the equipment. The inspection involves keeping a checklist of items and reporting any concerns right away.
The Work Site
Having a safe and clean workplace is important in the safe operation of a forklift. A safe work place means establishing "traffic lanes" which are only designated for forklift use. Warning systems such as horns and flashing lights should be in place to be able to indicate when there is a forklift approaching. Forklift docking stations must be kept in good repair and inspected on a daily basis.
General Guidelines
General safety guidelines for forklift use include avoiding known hazards on the ground, such as wet spots or oil spills; making sure that there is enough clearance for the load; lowering or raising the load only when the forklift is stationary; and keeping legs, hands and arms inside the vehicle while using it.
